RELEARNING & REMAPPING
One of the interesting points I find myself reflecting on during these sessions at the rink is as follows: I don’t simply want to get back to where I was as a hockey player years ago. No, I want to start anew now with new modern habits, cleaner execution of old techniques, and skate with correcting the imbalances I knew I had back in the day.
I want to use this opportunity of remapping my nervous system with a familiar skill but with new & more efficient methods. It seems wasteful to use new gear to do old mechanics. I want to make modern use of modern gear. And with that, I am excited to learn modern methodology!
Its easy to want to fall back on what we know: yet sometimes we must use remapping techniques to insert new habits in the framework of familiar structures. It is what I have been focusing on in the last few weeks.
With social media now, hockey/mobility/goalie videos are abundantly available to the learner to absorb. I’ve been watching hours of video and studying how things are done today. It is so inspiring to take those methods from numerous athletes, bring them to the rink, and make them my own.
