Welcome to the QHA. 

We are the first ever amputee focused upright hockey program in Milford CT.

Lead by above knee amputee, Phil Hovey, the QHA invites amputees of ALL limb differences to join in our programming.

As an amputee due to congenital defects of his right leg, Phil has been an amputee since 16 months of age.

He gravitated to hockey as his favorite sport during the years leading up to the New York Rangers’ 1994 Stanley Cup winning season. Playing street hockey with friends, roller hockey at Riverside Sports Complex, and later ice hockey all over CT…Mr Phil has always been a goalie.

His dedication to ice hockey saw him play goal for the Fairfield Fired Department hockey team for numerous seasons as their number 1 goalie.

Now after 13 years away from the rink, Mr Phil is back on the ice. He’s paired up with the best prosthetic care team from Hanger Clinic: Stratford CT. His own prosthetist is a former hockey player. Her skills as a clinician paired with her experience on the ice saw her collaborate with Phil to build the ultimate hockey-specific prosthetic leg.

Now, Mr Phil invites amputees from all walks of life, limb differences, and ability levels to join the game that made him.

“I played shared locker rooms with players who’d never want to share the ice with me once they saw my leg” said Mr Phil recently in an interview with the QHA’s home rink, Milford Ice Arena.

It is the goal of the QHA to create a welcoming, inclusive, and empowering environment for adaptive sports participants to gather, network, and come together without fear of ever being judged for their differences.

The QHA will offer clinics and events to guide players in:

• Learn to skate

• Learn hockey basics

• Learn to pass/shoot (with our own QHA coaches!)

• 3 on 3 games played with Mr Phil in goal

Members of the QHA’s inaugural roster include dedicated & compassionate players hand picked from Mr Phil’s own support system. Founding QHA members Bill and Paul are career firefighters, granting the utmost focus on safety of all QHA participants.
