Photography Mini Classes

WIth over 16 years experience as a photography instructor, Mr Phil Hovey presents these regular scheduled classes to you. Designed around the core information needed to begin, continue, and enhance your photographic journey...these classes will be held on the 1st Thursday of every month. 

Each class will feature a topic chosen from the rotating and ever-growing list of fundamental and inspirational knowledge base of Mr Phil's photographic mind. On select weeks, photo taking events will be hosted where you bring your gear for a true shoot!

Thursday June 5: From Smartphone To Dedicated Camera

Many of us rely on our smartphone as our main camera for both photo and video taking. When is it time to switch to a dedicated camera? What are the benefits and obstacles of picking up a dedicated camera in favor of a smartphone camera? We talk about these themes and many more in this mini class. Photo & video examples shot by Mr Phil will accompany the knowledge in this class.

Thursday July 10: Intro To Photography Principles

Whether you use a smartphone camera, compact fixed lens camera, compact interchangeable lens camera, DSLR, or interchangeable lens mirrorless camera...you'll enjoy this class. We go over topics such as composition, expsoure, color & shadow balance, image formats, storing & processing photos.

Thursday August 7: Composition I

We often spend so much time thinking about camera settings, exposure numbers, and technical details when taking pictures that we forgot to dedicate thought to WHAT is in the picture and how we want to frame it. Composing a photo is a powerful skill that can take a mundane subject shot with less than ideal settings and elevate it to a true story telling capture. This mini class will give you insght on subject palcement, seeing & making use of foreground/background elements, as well as common suggested rules to make your photos' stories come to life
